Koi And Ripples Relief Panel

A koi drifting past spreading ripples, carved in soft bas-relief. This CNC panel pairs two ideas across one gently pillowed rectangular field. On the left, a single koi carp is worked in raised relief, its overlapping scales, flared fins and trailing tail finely detailed. On the right, a set of concentric water rings spirals inward to a deep sunken well, as though a drop has just struck the surface. The contrast between the crisp fish and the smooth, flowing ripples gives the piece real movement and a calm, meditative mood — very at home in a Japanese- or zen-inspired interior. It suits a machined wall plaque, a decorative inset for a cabinet door, or a feature tile set above a doorway. The subtle doming of the background also catches raking light beautifully, so side lighting really shows off the carving. Cut notes: • Built for 3-axis CNC as a relief; a ball-nose bit gives the smoothest transitions across the ripple field. • Rough with a larger end mill, then finish with a 2–3 mm ball-nose for the scales and the deep central well. • Walnut, oak or cherry hold the fine fin detail best; seal the end grain before applying an oil finish. • Printing instead of milling? Lay it flat, use fine layers, and give the ripple zone a light sand to smooth the steps.
