Rope-Twist Bead-and-Reel Moulding

A long run of classical trim, dense with carved ornament from end to end. This is a linear moulding strip built for repetition. Along the top edge runs a tight rope-twist border — a continuous braided cord — and directly beneath it sits a richly detailed band of bead-and-reel and leaf ornament, the little repeating volutes catching the warm gilt light of the render. The profile is shallow and consistent along its whole length, which is exactly what you want in a moulding: cut it, repeat it, and mitre it around a corner without the pattern breaking. Cabinetmakers, frame builders and restorers will recognise the use straight away — cornice runs, the crown of a bookcase or cabinet, picture and mirror frames, panel borders, or a decorative rail on furniture. Tile several copies end to end for a longer span. CNC / print notes: • On a router, machine it as a length of hardwood stock; a fine ball-nose for the rounded beads and a small V-bit to sharpen the reel divisions. • Design the ends flat and square so lengths butt seamlessly before mitring. • For 3D printing, lay it flat and print in resin for the crispest bead-and-reel detail. • A gilt cream or antique-gold wax rubbed into the relief and buffed back reads beautifully against a stained or painted ground.
