Description

A lathe-turned urn shape with all the plump, generous curves of a classical newel cap. This piece is a smooth, three-dimensional turned form rather than a flat carving: a wide, rounded belly swells out at the middle, tapers up through a slim waisted neck to a flared cove at the top, and sits on a stacked, ringed foot at the bottom. There is no surface pattern, and it doesn't need one, the whole appeal is in the profile and the way light rolls across its balloon-like body. It reads as a finial or ornamental knob, the kind that tops a bedpost, stair newel, gatepost, or cabinet, or stands alone as a mantel or shelf ornament. Because it is symmetrical about its vertical axis, it looks right from every angle. Cut it as a rotary/4th-axis turning if you have the setup, or as a two-sided 3D relief carved front and back and joined at the seam. Print notes: • On a router, an indexed rotary axis gives the cleanest continuous surface; otherwise machine two halves and glue. • Finish with a fine ball-nose and a shallow stepover so the curved body needs minimal sanding. • Add a dowel or threaded insert into the base foot for a solid mount. • Close-grained hardwood turns and finishes to a glassy sheen under wax or oil.
