Celtic Knotwork Mandala Panel

Endless interlaced bands wound into a single radial medallion. This relief panel takes the old Celtic language of over-under knotwork and pulls it into a mandala: strapwork looping out from a central hub in balanced radial symmetry, so the eye keeps travelling the ribbon and never quite finds where it begins or ends. That woven, self-returning quality is the whole point of the piece, and it carves beautifully as a shallow-to-medium relief where the raised bands catch a raking light. It works as a cabinet-door centre, a headboard inlay, a jewellery-box lid or a simple framed plaque above a desk. Cut small it becomes a coaster or a drinks-tray insert; scaled up it holds its own as standalone wall art. Cut notes • Reach for a tight-grained hardwood such as oak, walnut or hard maple; softwoods tend to tear where the bands cross over one another. • Rough with a ball-nose bit for the rounded strap crossings, then drop in a fine tapered V-bit to sharpen the recesses between the weaves. • Leave the stock oversized and trim to final dimension after carving so the border edges don't blow out. • A wiped-in dark glaze or wax pushed into the low channels exaggerates the over-under illusion; finish the raised faces with oil for contrast. A quiet, meditative motif that suits Celtic, pagan and folk-craft interiors without shouting for attention.
