Baroque Bird and Acanthus Panel

A deep Baroque panel where a graceful bird nests in a whirl of carved foliage. This rectangular relief is a showpiece. In the upper left, a long-necked stylised bird, a peacock or phoenix, turns its head back over a plumed tail of stacked scrolls. From there the whole surface erupts into swirling acanthus: a big pinwheel of overlapping leaves spins at the centre, secondary fronds curl and roll toward the corners, and a little cluster of round cherries or berries anchors the lower edge. The carving is genuinely deep, with leaves lifting and undercutting over one another, so raking light throws bold shadows and gives the piece real sculptural drama. It's designed to be seen up close, mounted as a framed wall relief, set into a cabinet door or headboard panel, or used as a feature insert in a bespoke piece of furniture. Cutting notes • This wants a proper 3D bas-relief workflow: a roughing pass then a fine ballnose finishing pass (0.5 mm stepover or less) to keep the leaf edges and the bird's plumage clean. • Deep recesses mean longer cut times, use a tapered ballnose for reach and rigidity in the undercut areas. • A close-grained hardwood (walnut, cherry, lime, tulipwood) carries the detail far better than soft or open-grained timber. • Finish with oil to deepen the tone, or lightly gild the high points against a stained background for a dramatic antique contrast.
