Classical Palmette Anthemion Onlay

A classical palmette unfurling like a fan of feathered petals over a pair of tucked scrolls. This decorative onlay is a stacked anthemion motif: broad lobed leaves spread outward and upward in two overlapping tiers, each petal grooved down its centre so it reads as a plume. At the base the design gathers to a small round boss flanked by two neat inward-curling volutes, giving the whole ornament a graceful, symmetrical, teardrop outline. The carving is soft and rounded, catching light along every raised rib. This is a furniture-maker's and restorer's staple — an applied ornament for cabinet crests, mirror tops, mantels, bed frames, clock cases or door panels, wherever a spot of classical flourish is wanted. Print notes: • It's a one-sided onlay: seat it flat-back-down and carve/print the front face only, no supports needed. • On CNC, rough the tiers with a suitable end mill then finish the petal flutes and the tight base scrolls with a fine ball nose to hold the curl detail. • Scale it to your piece before cutting — palmettes look best sized to the width of the rail or crest they sit on. • In wood it takes stain and gilding well; printed in resin it makes a light, glue-on appliqué for painted furniture.
