Celtic Knotwork Square Panel

Endless Celtic knotwork, mirrored into a single dense square panel. This CNC relief is built from interlacing bands, triquetra triangles and looping tendrils that weave over and under one another in classic insular-art fashion, arranged with four-fold symmetry so the pattern radiates from a calm open centre out to leaf-tipped corners. The carving reads as true woven strapwork: the ribbons dip and rise so that light and shadow trace each strand's path, and small pointed leaf and spearhead motifs fill the negative space to keep the surface rich without becoming muddy. It is a decorative face panel rather than a functional tray, ideal as a framed wall plaque, cabinet-door inset, chest lid, or a headboard medallion. CNC notes • Deep, tight interlace like this wants a two-stage cut: a roughing pass to clear the backgrounds, then a fine tapered ballnose (say 1/16") to define the crossing bands and pointed tips. • Choose a tight-grained timber (beech, cherry, maple) so the thin strands do not chip where the weave crosses. • Mind the grain direction on the slender leaf points and take a light final pass to avoid tear-out. • A dark stain wiped back off the raised bands, or a gilded highlight, makes the knot pattern leap off a darker background. • Scales cleanly as a matched set of tiles if you want to run a border or a larger wall of repeats.
