Radiant Acanthus Rosette Medallion

A sunburst of acanthus petals wrapped around a single domed heart. This round rosette is carved as a ring of broad, lobed leaves radiating from a raised central boss, the sort of medallion that anchors the middle of a door panel, a coffered ceiling or the cap of a newel post. Look closely and the petals alternate: fuller outer leaves cup smaller inner tongues, each one channelled with a deep central groove so the whole disc reads as layered rather than flat. The domed button at the centre gives it a focal high point that throws a clean circular shadow. It suits furniture makers dressing up plain cabinetry, and works equally well printed as a decorative appliqué glued onto a flush surface. Symmetry is its strength; mounted dead centre it draws the eye at once. Cut notes • Stock: a rosette this round rewards stable, even material, either a good hardwood or dense MDF for painted work. • Roughing then finishing with a tapered ball nose keeps the petal grooves sharp without burning. • Orientation: carve flat and single-sided; the back stays plain for gluing or screwing. • Finish: gild or dry-brush the raised dome and leaf ridges so the relief pops against a darker recess. Scale it up for a ceiling centrepiece or down for drawer-front jewellery, as the geometry holds at almost any diameter.
