Filigree Scroll Rosette Medallion

Symmetrical scrollwork blooming out from a small floral heart. This medallion is pure openwork ornament. At its centre sits a tight rosette of pointed petals, and from there the design radiates outward in layered rings of S-scrolls and volutes, each curl mirroring its neighbour so the whole panel holds fourfold balance. Slender leaf-tip finials mark the compass points, and heart-shaped scroll pairs bridge the outer ring, giving the piece a lacy, wrought-iron delicacy where the raised ribbons float over open ground. Because it is round and fully symmetrical it drops neatly into the middle of a space: a ceiling rose around a light fitting, a wall medallion over a bed or sofa, a table-top centre inlay, or the front of a large cabinet door. It also cuts well as pierced openwork for a screen or gate panel. Cut notes • Mount the blank securely — the openwork ground means several narrow bridges of material, so use tabs and go gentle on the finishing feed rate to avoid snapping them. • A fine ball-nose renders the rounded ribbon tops; a small V-bit crisps the valleys between adjacent scrolls. • For a pierced version, drill lead-in holes in the voids before profiling them out. • Ease every scroll edge before finishing; gilt cream or a metallic wax over a dark base gives it that antique cast-metal glow.
