Description

An acanthus starburst that fans out in every direction from a single polished bead. Where a plain rosette would sit quietly, this carving throws four lush sprays of deeply lobed acanthus foliage into a cross, each frond curling and splitting into feathered tips that taper to fine points at the compass corners. Undercut shadows run between the leaves, and a round domed boss anchors the middle, giving the eye somewhere to rest amid all the movement. It is ornate, Baroque and unapologetically decorative. This is the sort of appliqu that suits a fireplace overmantel, a grand door, a bed centre or a ceiling medallion, anywhere a room can carry a little drama. Mirror or rotate it to build friezes and matching corner sets. Carving and printing notes: • The deep, overlapping leaves want a tapered ball-nose (1.5-2mm) on the finishing pass so the undercuts stay crisp. • Tight-grained hardwood or a dense modelling board holds the fine leaf tips best; MDF works if you seal and prime it. • On an FDM printer, lay it flat on the back and run a 0.12mm layer height to capture the veining; a light sand and filler-primer readies it for gilding. • Keep the surrounding wood a touch proud, then blend the flat border into the surface after glue-up.
