Layered Peony Round Medallion

A full peony bursting open inside a round recessed frame. The flower head sits proud at the centre — layer upon layer of ruffled petals curling tightly at the core and opening wider toward the edge, with long slender leaves sweeping around the lower half in a lazy spiral. A stepped circular rim frames it all, lifting the bloom out of a shallow dished background so it reads as a medallion rather than a flat panel. This one is made to be a centrepiece. Use it as a decorative ceiling rose, the inset panel of a cabinet or wardrobe door, a round wall plaque, or the lid of a keepsake box. At smaller scale it becomes a jewellery-box medallion or a furniture rosette. Cut notes • Genuine high-relief work: the layered petals need a fine tapered ball-nose and a patient finishing pass to separate each fold. • Rough with a larger end mill first to clear the recessed field, then step down for detail. • Choose a close-grained hardwood or a dense modelling board — soft, open grain will blur the petal tips. • If 3D printing, orient it face-up and drop to a slow finishing layer height to hold the botanical detail.
