Fourfold Scroll Rosette Roundel

A deep, dished roundel in which four leafy scrolls chase each other around a turned central boss. The composition has clean fourfold rotational symmetry: each quarter carries a large comma-shaped scroll that pinwheels around the middle, its tail curling under while smaller flame-like leaf tips fill the gaps between the arms. At the very centre sits a raised concentric button ringed with fine grooves, like a lathe-turned pip, and the whole design is framed by a rounded outer bead. The carving is bold and genuinely three-dimensional, with plenty of shadow in the undercuts. It works beautifully as a rosette for a stair newel post, a ceiling centre, a corner block over a door, or a medallion set into a cabinet or headboard. Cut & print notes • This is a deep relief, so plan for a roughing pass with a stout bit followed by a fine ball-nose to reach into the curled undercuts. • Hardwoods such as oak, ash or sapele hold the crisp scroll edges well; MDF is fine if it will be painted. • Where a router cannot reach the deepest curls, 3D printing the roundel in resin captures the overhangs cleanly. • The circular bead frame makes it easy to centre and mount; finish with stain, paint or gilding to suit the room.
