Five-Petal Flower Rosette Onlay

A single open bloom, five soft petals fanning out from a domed heart. This is a carved flower rosette: five broad, gently cupped petals radiating symmetrically around a raised spherical centre, each petal grooved down the middle so light catches the ridges. The forms are smooth and rounded rather than sharp, giving a soft, almost pillowy look that reads well from a distance. It is a classic decorative appliqué motif, the kind of ornament used to dress up furniture, doors and panelling. Use it as a corner or centre accent on cabinet doors, drawer fronts, headboards, mirror frames or a jewellery box lid; a matched pair or set of four turns a plain piece into something crafted. Cut notes • Machine as a raised appliqué on a small blank, then part it off and glue in place, or carve it directly into the workpiece. • Rough with a ballnose and finish with a fine tapered ballnose so the petal grooves and the domed centre stay crisp. • Grain running across the petals looks best and reduces chipping at the thin petal tips. • In hardwood it can be left natural and oiled; in softer stock, seal before painting or gilding the centre for contrast.
