Description

A fan of scalloped petals spreading above a curl of acanthus — a jewel-like carved onlay. This is a decorative applique shaped like an opening flower or shell: rounded, scalloped petals radiate outward in a fan, each divided by a soft valley, while the lower half gathers into a symmetrical acanthus sprig with two tightly rolled volutes and a smooth egg-shaped boss at the centre. The relief is deep and confident, with clear high points that catch light beautifully. Makers use pieces like this as furniture centre ornaments — on cabinet doors, drawer fronts, headboards and mirror frames — or as a standalone carved medallion applied to a plain panel. It is a classic period-revival motif that dresses up flat surfaces instantly. Print notes: • For CNC, this is a flat-backed relief: surface with a ball-nose finishing pass at a fine stepover to keep the petal edges crisp. • The rolled volutes and the central boss are the deepest points — plan tool reach so the bit clears them without gouging. • For 3D printing, lay it flat on the bed relief-side up and print at 0.12 mm; no supports needed on a flat back. • Prime and sand lightly, then glue to the workpiece with PVA or grab adhesive; a dark wax in the recesses makes the carving pop. Cut it small for a knob-sized accent or scale it up as a cabinet crest — the symmetry keeps it reading cleanly at any size.
