Description

A crisp four-petal bloom pressed into a tidy square frame. This CNC relief centres on a rounded hemispherical boss, from which four broad, spooned acanthus petals sweep out toward the corners of a recessed square border. Smaller pointed leaf-tips fill the gaps between the main leaves, so the eye reads it as both a flower and a compass rosette — symmetrical from any of its four sides. The carving is deep and confident in the middle and feathers out toward the frame, giving it a soft, hand-shaped look rather than a flat stamped motif. It makes a natural centre-block for a cabinet door, a drawer front, a blanket-chest lid or a square newel-post cap, and it repeats beautifully as a run of matching tiles along a frieze or apron. Cut notes • Single-sided relief: machine face-up from a squared blank, leaving the flat border as your reference plane. • Rough with a flat end mill, then a 2–3 mm ballnose finishing pass across the petals to keep the scooped hollows smooth. • Run the grain diagonally, corner to corner, to reduce short-grain flaking at the petal tips. • In a close-grained hardwood — maple, cherry or tulipwood — it takes stain or gilt cream well; ease the sharp frame edge lightly before finishing. Equally happy carved in wood, machinable wax or dense modelling board.
