Four-Petal Domed Rosette Tile

A four-petal bloom pressed cleanly into a neat square of carved timber. This relief tile pivots on a smooth domed boss — a raised half-sphere sitting dead centre — from which four broad, sail-like petals sweep out toward the corners. At each edge, tucked between the petals, a nested U-shaped ribbon curls back on itself like a stylised horseshoe, giving the whole panel a slow pinwheel rhythm that still reads sharply from across a room. A stepped square border frames the motif, so it works either as a repeatable field tile or as a standalone accent block. Cabinetmakers reach for pieces like this to break up a flat door, cap a newel post, or stud a run of wainscoting; set four in a grid and the domes throw a satisfying line of matching highlights. It also drops neatly into a coffered ceiling square or the middle of a plain drawer front. Print notes • Carve in a tight-grained hardwood (maple, cherry, beech) so the domed boss and petal ridges keep a crisp edge. • Rough out with a 1/4" end mill, then finish the sweeping hollows with a tapered ball-nose for sanding-free transitions. • Keep the model flat on the bed — this is a single-sided relief with no undercuts to fight. • Pool a little hardwax oil into the recesses to deepen the shadow lines and make the four petals stand up.
