Four-Petal Baroque Rosette Onlay

A plump four-petal rosette that looks like a flower caught mid-bloom in carved timber. This is a classic decorative medallion, not a Celtic panel. Four fat, rounded petal-clusters radiate outward from a smooth central bead, each one furling over on itself with deep undercut grooves so the light pools in the hollows and skips along the ridges. Pointed acanthus-style tongues fill the gaps between the main lobes, giving the whole roundel a rich, layered, almost baroque density. It's compact, symmetrical and endlessly repeatable. Pieces like this are the workhorses of decorative woodwork: glue-on onlays for cabinet doors, bed headboards, stair newel posts, fireplace surrounds and ceiling centres, or a standalone carved ornament for a wall. The bold, deep relief means it still reads from across a room. Cut notes • A two-stage toolpath works best: a roughing pass to clear the deep valleys, then a 2mm–4mm ball-nose finishing pass for the smooth petal curves. • Tight-grained hardwood (beech, cherry, walnut) or a hard modelling board holds the rounded lobes without chip-out. • Watch tool reach in the deepest central grooves — a tapered ball-nose keeps the walls clean. • Sand the raised petal crowns lightly, leave the recesses crisp, then seal; a rubbed wax or shellac makes the light-and-shadow contrast sing.
