Description

A deep, four-square rosette carved so boldly it almost looks pillowed. Four broad lobed leaves splay out to the corners of a square field, their edges rolling and folding over deep shadow grooves, while a smooth domed boss sits dead centre like a button holding the whole flower together. A crisp X of diagonal channels runs corner to corner between the leaves, giving the block its four-fold snap and a lot of light-and-shadow depth for its size. This is the workhorse ornament of traditional joinery, the plinth block, door-casing corner, newel-post face or cabinet corner where a stile meets a rail. Its heavy relief means it holds its own even on chunky architrave, and the square outline lets it butt straight into flat trim with no fuss. Print notes: • Deep pockets between the lobes call for a stepped approach, rough with a 6mm end mill, then a 3mm ball-nose, then a fine bit for the crisp centre-line valleys. • The domed boss should be finished with a small ball-nose on a fine stepover so it comes off perfectly smooth. • Any stable hardwood suits it, oak and beech read especially well under stain because the deep grooves pool colour. • Watch the tool clearance in the tight X-channels; a tapered bit reaches the valley floor without rubbing the walls.
