Pleated Fan Rosette Medallion

A crisp pleated rosette that catches raking light like folded paper. This CNC relief is a circular fan-fold medallion: a ring of sharp radial pleats fans outward from the centre in alternating high and low facets, and at the heart sits a smooth domed boss that reads like a polished button. The alternating creases throw dramatic light-and-shadow, so the piece looks far more intricate than its clean geometry — very Art Deco, very architectural. Rosettes like this are workhorses of decorative woodworking: mount them at the corners of door and window casings, as plinth blocks on trim, on cabinet doors, headboards, or as a repeating feature along a fireplace surround. Cut a set and you instantly lift plain joinery into something with period character. Cut and finish notes: • Carve into a close-grained hardwood — maple, beech or cherry — so the pleat edges stay sharp; a 2-flute ballnose gives the smooth dome, then a fine tapered bit cleans the crease valleys. • Run a roughing pass then a detailed finishing pass at small stepover to avoid stepping on the domed centre. • Machine flat on the bed; the design is symmetrical and self-supporting, so no fixturing tricks are needed. • Scales cleanly from a small 40 mm accent up to a large ceiling-boss size — just keep the boss proportional. Finishes beautifully in wax, oil, or gilt cream on the raised faces.
