Square Petal Rosette Trim Block

A bold four-petal rosette pressed into a recessed square. This block sets a domed flower at the centre of a stepped, sunken frame: four broad, rounded petals swell out toward the sides while narrow pointed leaves slot between them on the diagonals, all radiating from a small turned button at the heart. The petals bulge with a soft, cushioned relief, and the deep square rebate around them throws a clean shadow that makes the bloom sit up. It's a classic plinth or corner block — the sort of rosette that terminates fluted door casing and window trim, caps a newel post, or studs the corners of panelled joinery. Cut notes • Machine it as a pocket: cut the square recess and outer border first, then the domed rosette as the raised island in the middle. • A 6mm end mill clears the flat ground quickly; switch to a 2mm ball nose for the petal grooves and the central button. • Paint-grade hardwood or poplar is ideal since these usually get primed to match trim; oak suits a stained, natural look. • Keep the dome height a little under the frame lip so the block sits flush against adjoining mouldings.
