Description

A plump petalled rosette blooming around a domed centre boss. This is a carved rosette medallion — an oval flower head of a dozen or so deep, spoon-hollowed petals radiating from a smooth central knob. Each petal is scooped concave so it pools shadow at the rim and catches light along its spine, and the whole bloom sits proud as a single applique with a flat back for mounting. It is the classic decorative paterae ornament that dresses furniture and joinery: corner blocks on a door or window casing, the centre of a cabinet panel, a stair bracket, a bed-post cap, or the meeting point of a mirror frame. Modest in size and instantly recognisable, it is the sort of accent you scatter in multiples to tie a whole scheme together. Print notes: • Cut it as a raised relief with the workpiece clamped flat and the tool working the top face; the smooth underside is the mounting surface, so keep it dead true. • The concave petals want a ball-nose finishing pass with a fine stepover — that keeps the scooped surfaces smooth without sanding into the ridges. • Scale it to fit its frame; rosettes look best sized in proportion to the casing or panel they sit on. • Works in wood or dense modelling board; seal, then paint, stain or gild. A dab of gilt cream on the raised ridges gives a quick, elegant highlight.
