Bear-Head Celtic Knotwork Column

A carved cylinder crowned with a snub-nosed bear head and belted in Celtic rope. This is a turned-and-carved column in the round: one end tapers into a small, alert bear (or wolf) head with rounded ears and a blunt muzzle, the shaft runs a tight four-strand Celtic plait down its length, and the opposite end finishes in a fluted collar with two scrolling S-motifs on its face. Ringed bands separate each section so the piece reads like a miniature totem or a ceremonial handle. It works beautifully as a newel-post cap, a bed-post finial, a stair or furniture accent, or the grip of a decorative staff. Woodturners and prop makers will find the animal terminal gives an otherwise plain post real character. Because the design is fully cylindrical, it is happiest cut on a 4th-axis rotary or indexer, spinning the blank while the bit follows the knotwork. On a flatbed you can split it along the centre-line and glue the halves. Print notes: • Cut in a tight-grained hardwood (oak, beech or walnut) so the plait edges stay crisp. • Rough with a ball-nose, then finish-pass with a fine tapered ball for the head detail and knot valleys. • Sand the braid by hand with folded paper; the recesses take stain well for contrast. • If 3D printing instead, orient the shaft vertical and add light supports only under the bear's chin.
