Description

A furniture leg with a raptor's stare built into the knee. The top of this carved leg is sculpted as the head and breast of an eagle — hooked beak, sharp eye and a cape of neatly overlapping, chiselled feathers spilling down the shoulder. From there the form sweeps into a long, gently curved and tapering post, smooth along its length save for a fine leaf-and-berry sprig where the feathering meets the shaft. The upper end squares off into a plain block ready to mate with an apron or rail, and the round lower section is set up as a turned, tapering foot. It is aimed at furniture makers and restorers after a characterful leg for a hall table, console, cabinet or bench, and works equally as a newel-post cap or a decorative pier accent. Cutting notes • This is a 3D form best cut on a 4-axis or rotary/indexed setup so the eagle head and feathers carve fully in the round • Rough with a ball-nose, then detail the beak, eye and feather laps with a fine tapered bit • Choose a dense hardwood (walnut, beech, oak) so the beak and feather edges don't crumble • Print a resin master first to check proportion against your piece, then hand-finish and seal before mounting
