Prowling Cougar Knife Handle Scale

A stalking mountain lion frozen mid-stride across the palm. This is a full knife-handle body — a gently waisted grip shaped to sit inside a closed hand — with a raised oval cartouche at its centre carrying a big cat in low relief. The cougar is caught in a slow prowl: head lowered, shoulder blades rolling forward, long tail curling out behind it toward the bolster. Flanking that medallion are two diamond-knurled panels, a dense field of tiny raised pyramids that read as texture and give the thumb and finger pads something to bite against. Both ends flare into subtle finger guards, so the piece works as a decorative replacement scale for a fixed-blade knife, a standalone display handle, or a master pattern for casting. It is aimed at knife makers, cutlery restorers and collectors who want a wildlife motif instead of plain slab scales. Print notes: • Lay the handle on its flat back so the cougar relief and both knurl fields face straight up — you capture the crispest detail with no supports on the show face. • The pyramid knurling wants a 0.2 mm layer height or finer; anything coarser blurs the grid into mush. • On a CNC router, cut the oval relief with a fine tapered ball nose (1–2 mm) and clear the knurl field with a small V-bit for sharp valleys. • Walnut or maple hardwood, or cast resin, suits the animal theme — finish with oil to sink the recessed ground and lift the cat.
